The river valleys of Ladakh form natural routes through the otherwise hard to navigate, high altitude terrain. It is impressive to see that they are still the most effective way to cross the Ladakh mountain range. On foot, over the mountains, this is a trip of a couple of weeks, and even in a 4x4 vehicle, along unreliable gravel roads, it can take several days. So, on a kayak trip, to reach the river, you can find yourself in out-of-the-way places, and become immersed in cultures that you would not as a normal traveller.
